Laser Tattoo Removal

Although a tattoo looks like a simple painting, it is actually a series of ink deposits deep within the skin, these were designed to last forever. For many reasons it is now increasingly common for people to seek laser tattoo removal. Early methods carried a high risk of scarring, were painful and not very effective. The introduction of Q-Switched lasers (that are used by Body Enhance) greatly improved the process of laser tattoo removal, allowing the laser technician to eliminate most tattoos with a high degree of success and very low risk of scarring. The Q-Switched Nd:YAG lasers that use Photoacoustic energy are the gold standard lasers for tattoo removal, with a strong history of efficiency worldwide.

Laser Tattoo Removal Treatment

Pre Treatment Consultation

No treatment is carried out without a consultation. This must be carried out at least 2 weeks prior to any laser tattoo removal. During the consultation a medical history will be taken, your skin typed against the Fitzpatrick skin type scale and a small patch test will be carried out of 3 small dots. This is to firstly check you do not have a negative reaction to the laser tattoo removal but also to check which dot reacts best and removes the most amount of ink as each dot is a different strength (strongest isn't always the best) .

Pre and Post treatment advice will be provided so you can plan for your session appropriately. After the consultation you can then book your future treatments.

The laser tattoo removal patch test and consultation is free of charge and no obligation to book future treatments.

During treatment

Your medical history will be checked for any changes at each appointment. Then providing no changes that stop treatment, you will be seated in a treatment chair wearing the appropriate protective glasses or goggles for your treatment.

Photographs may also be taken for a "before and after" comparison at a later date but only with your consent.

The laser tattoo removal process will then be carried out.

The treatment is very fast and no where the time it took to have the tattoo. Most clients have completed the treatment within a 30 min slot but this depends on the size of your tattoo.

Aftercare

Aftercare information would have been provided to you at your initial consultation to have prepared you for your treatment but this will be supplied again. Suitable ointments are available for purchase but a simple ice pack or Aloe Vera gel is all that is recommended or anti histamine tablets if you find the area itchy after treatment during healing.

It is import you do not scratch or pick at the treated area and follow the aftercare provided for best results.

But as a simple rule - you follow the same aftercare you followed when you had the tattoo originally done (except for the creams or ointments you may have then used).

Return visit

Recovery times differ from person to person (with skin completely healing at a rate or 28-45 days) and your next appointment should be booked for 6 weeks after treatment but this can be rescheduled at a later date if you find you heal slower.

Body Enhance will not provide another treatment on the same tattoo sooner than 6 weeks after.

Laser Tattoo Removal FAQ's

How does the laser remove the tattoo?

Lasers target tattoos with a very specific wavelength of light energy – in fact, a separate wavelength is required for each ink colour. The popular Q-Switched lasers use Photoacoustic energy to gently penetrate the skin and target tattoo ink. The light energy gently vibrates and shatters the tattoo ink into micro-particles that are eventually eliminated through the body’s natural processes. Because the laser delivers the energy in a very precise ‘beam,’ Practitioner can trace the design without damaging the surrounding skin.

How many laser treatments are needed to remove a tattoo?

Laser tattoo removal requires several sessions. On average, professional tattoos require 4 to 12 treatments, while amateur tattoos require 4 to 5 treatments, spaced approximately six weeks apart. However every individual and tattoo is unique and some might require more while others require less. The number of treatments is dependent on the size of the tattoo, the amount and type of ink used, and the depth of the ink in the skin. The skill of the tattooist, your general health and skin type. The location of the tattoo will also affect the clearance rate. Cost varies according to size.

For tattoos that will be covered with a new tattoo, an average of 2-5 laser tattoo removal treatments will be required, depending on the size and pigment density of your current piece, the desired cover-up tattoo and how comfortable your artist is carrying out the new tattoo. We will work with you and the tattoo artist to determine how many tattoo removal treatments will be required.

Will the tattoo completely disappear?

In most cases, yes. After the initial treatment, you will notice a temporary whitening of the treated area. Over time, the tattoo will fade and the skin returns to normal colour. Lasers will generally remove approximately 95% of the tattoo but some colours may require more treatments to remove. There is also a possibility that a small amount of pigment may remain in the skin, typically we call this ghosting and for most clients, this is considered acceptable as a removed tattoo.

What if I only want to lighten my tattoo to get it covered?

Choosing to have your tattoo lightened prior to being covered will result in a much better quality final tattoo, and is often suggested by responsible tattoo artists. We can stop laser tattoo removal treatments when your tattoo artist is happy with the results and confident they can give you the tattoo you desire. You must wait at least 6 weeks after your final laser removal session before having the cover up.

Can I have only part of my tattoo removed?

Yes. Quite often there is a portion of a tattoo that you would like removed and / or covered, and we can target just those specific areas of your tattoo very finely due to our chosen machine, experience and skill.

Will I see changes after each treatment?

Because of the inconsistency in tattoo ink and each client being different, you may not see a massive change after each session, although most clients will see immediate change after the very first treatment. We photograph and record each tattoo prior to treatment so we can plot progress for you.

It is not uncommon for a week following your laser tattoo removal session that the ink will become temporarily darker under the skin and look somewhat like a brand new tattoo. The ink will then start to fade away.

Will there be any scarring?

The likelihood of scarring is very low, however it is possible if the aftercare instructions are not followed. There is a slight possibility of hyper-pigmentation or hypo-pigmentation, which will be discussed during your initial consultation. Pre-existing scars present prior to laser tattoo removal will still be present after treatments, only the inks will be targeted and affected.

How long do I have to wait between treatments?

Recovery differs for each individual, we generally suggest 6 weeks minimum between treatments. However, dependent on the total goal, pigment saturation and other factors, it could be longer.

Is laser tattoo removal painful?

Each individual perceives pain differently, so there is no definitive answer. There will be some mild discomfort that is often associated with a hot rubber band being snapped on the skin or hot spitting oil. Within minutes of the procedure ending, most clients report little to no discomfort.

Is my skin type suitable for Laser Tattoo Removal using Nd:YAG Laser?

Some skin types are not suitable such as very dark skin due to the high pigment level. To check skin suitability we use the Fitzpatrick Skin Type Chart.

What should I do before my treatment?

Wash and clean the skin, shave any hair in the area receiving laser tattoo removal and avoid any lotions or body glitter prior to treatment. Sunbeds or sunbathing should also be avoided before treatment.

What type of post-treatment care is necessary?

The aftercare is very similar to that of a tattoo, the area must be kept clean, and some ointments can be used a day after the treatment. Post treatment instructions will be provided. You can take a shower the next day, although the treated area should never be soaked or scrubbed. If a blister or scab forms it is important that you do not pick or scratch it.

What is the price for laser tattoo removal?

Prices depend on the size of the tattoo. Please see our prices tab.
